Design Team: Architect - Keys & Monaghan
The main aim of this contract was to construct a new build, fast-track timber framed research building for the WHSCT, finished to a clinical standard within a four month contract period. The 7,000ft² building over 2 floors is made up of various laboratories, six offices and included a new lift installation.
After fencing off the new site which was previously the hospital car parking, we experienced difficult ground conditions which provided for a deep dig and trench fill foundations. Under buildings and floors were all in concrete. The timber frame was erected within one week and the fabric was complete with facing brick and architectural cladding. Site works involved 50 No. additional parking spaces, footpaths, street lighting, soft and hard landscaping and moving the Hospital Heli-Pad to a new location some 20 metres away from the new building.
As we were working within a live hospital complex, a very detailed traffic management plan was agreed and implemented. An alterative site access was achieved over a green area and all deliveries had restricted times and a permanent banksman looked after site and visitor traffic.
